Chemical pink eye is a common condition that our clients sometimes experiences when the fume/vapour from the glue stings and burns their eye. IF your clients eyes tear up (one or both) during the application of lashes, is a good sign that she has been exposed/irritated by the fumes. It usually happens when the eyepads/tape is placed too close to the wet part of the eyelid or the eyepads/tape has moved up, preventing the client from closing her eyes properly. This results in the white part of the eyeball being exposed to the fumes. It also occurs if the client opens her eyes during the application or she opens them too soon after finishing the treatment. The eyeball is usually left red and bloodshot. A tender bruised sensation is experienced when you press down on the eyelid, hurting the entire eyeball a few hours later. The dryness that follows, can usually be treated with eyedrops to reduce discomfort. It usually clears up over 2-4 days on its own and the eyelids are not usually affected. And, if you have accidently burnt your clients eye with the glue vapour...Usually it happens to one eye only. Prevent this happening by:

How can you tell if its Chemical Pink eye as opposed to a glue allergy? I had a client whose eyes watered during the night after the extensions were applied and had bloodshot eyes (both) the next day but no swelling.

When you think about how food allegies affect sufferers, swelling comes to mind? right?.... And so it is with a Glue Allergy..... If the eyelid was not swollen, then it was NOT an allergy But, if the eyeballs are bloodshot...(straight after the application) then it could be for THREE reasons: 1. Then you may have burnt the cornea of her eyeball (chemical pink eye/chemical burn). Normal Eyedrops for a few days should help the eyes feel better, but they will be red for at least 2-3 days. Sometimes it happens on only ONE eye...but TWO is rare. 2. Another reason this may happen is due to the eyepads placed to close and the gel backing touching the eyeball. This case normally clears up overnight. 3. Or, above all else the last reason, is because the lashes were not placed correctly and is scratching the eyeball every time she blinks (corneal abrasion). If your having this problem on a regular basis, you might want to consider an advanced mini workshop with Lash Out to overcome these issues. Id love to show you a few tricks of the trade Happy New Year

Hi - i am currently a victim of the chemical pink eye. So far your post has been the most helpful as it perfectly described what i experienced getting eyelash extensions On Wednesday night. My left eye started watering excessively during the appointment, once she moved the tape a little it reduced my discomfort and my eye stopped watering shortly after. The next morning i woke up to a sore blood shot left eye, and now after 30 hours its still bloodshot.
Do you have any recommendations for healing it? She told me eyedrops make it worse, but ive also seen online that it can help. Just wondering if you have any insight. I have friends coming frmom out of town tonight, and i dont really want to go out with them looking like i have pink eye.
Thanks
Julia

Hello, I had gotten lash extensions 24 hours ago and believe I have chemical pink eye. Underneath my lower eyelid my eyes are bloodshot. I have read this post saying it takes 2-4 days to clear up but am wondering if I should have my eyelash extensions removed or am I okay to keep them? Just worried about the health of my eye. Also they are a little dry and it hurts to put in eye drops because the lower half of my eye ball is sensitive.

Hi, I am also day 2 of what I think is chemical pink eye in my left eye. It is bright red on the lower half of my eye and sore with a bruised like feeling. Definitely still as sore and as red as yesterday! Deliberating over whether or not to see a doctor.

So, I see this was on sept..1st. How is your eye? @renegade ?
I've gotten lashes once a month for the last year, but this last time I think the eye pad must have been too close to my eye and it didn't shut all the way possibly, leading to vapors irritating just my right eye. And today it is all red on the bottom side of my eye and sore, sore under the eye, and also feels sore if I squeeze my eye shut.
I'd just like to know how long it is going to take to clear up and feel better.

I think this also happened to me. I have never experienced it before but right away when the tape was on it felt too high. I woke up with a pain in my eye and my lower lid and below is very red and sore with a bruise feeling. I hope it goes away soon. My lash girl said usually a day or 2.
Anyone out there had this and it go away? Mine hurts to even wash the face with water in it

Ladies! I just had this happen too. Not sure why it happened to me, my guess is my eyes (both) weren’t closed all the way. She put gel pads under my eyes and it was hard to close my eyes completely so I think glue must have burned my eyes. I got them Saturday.& we decided to remove them today because we both felt they were only getting worse. She ordered glue for sensitive eyes and once my eyes are no longer red we will re apply. We will be doing a patch test with a few lashes first tho. I will say once she took the lashes off I had instant relief. The burning stopped. My eyes were still sore but the itching and burning was immediately gone. It’s been about 7 hours now and the redness has also gotten much better. I suggest you take yours off and try a sensitive glue as well. Good luck.

Same happened to me and a friend of mine I wound up going to urgent care to have them look at it, because I was afraid there might have been some damage. It was a little bit infected so I was prescribed some eyedrops, on the 2nd day and it feels a bit better. An anti-inflammatory helps also!

Hi Katie,
Having had lash extensions for the past 6 months or so I thought I was used to having them applied (infill every 2 weeks).
I've now had pink eye for 4 weeks, the chemist prescribed 'Optrex Infected Eye Drops' and then when it didn't get better after 2 weeks I went to see my GP, who said he didn't think it was an infection but an allergic reaction, so he prescribed antihistamine eye drops, which the chemist then told me they haven't sold for ages. I ended up ordering 'Clear Eyes Maximum Redness Relief'from Amazon which has helped somewhat. I am now at my whits end as I have been putting up with this for weeks and have what feels like burnt skin on my upper and lower lids and peeling skin. I don't know where I can go next for help having tried the chemist and my GP, so it would be great to know what eye drops you were prescribed please, I am willing to try anything now but I would absolutely never have eyelash extensions again.
