The term pink eye is most commonly used to refer to the infectious type of conjunctivitiscommonly called "Pink Eye" and "Red Eye". It is an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids). There are TWO forms of Pink Eye 1. Allergic reaction Results from allergic reactions or from chemical irritants such as air pollution, smoke, or NOXIOUS FUMES. For the allergic type, cool water constricts capillaries, and artificial tears sometimes relieve discomfort in mild cases. In more severe cases, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and antihistamines may be prescribed. Some patients with persistent allergic conjunctivitis may also require topical steroid drops. Antibiotic drops may also be used for treatment of complementary infections. 2. Viral/Bacterial infection The bacteria that most commonly cause infectious pink eye are staphylococci, pneumococci, and streptococci. Bacterial pink eye symptoms include eye pain, swelling, redness, and a moderate to large amount of discharge, usually yellow or greenish in color. AntiBiotic eyedrops will not help VIRAL Conjunctivitis - Only steriod drops. The treatment time for BOTH ALLERGIC & VIRAL/BACTERIAL Pink eye is usually 7-10 days. However, I would wait 14 days before making another appointment. WWW.LASHOUTLASHES.COMlashout@bigpond.net.au
